Gainesville and Alachua County Information
Gainesville, Florida is recognized as one of the nation's most livable, ecologically beautiful and technologically
advanced cities (named Florida Tree City of the Year in 1997). As the county seat of Alachua County, Gainesville FL
serves as the commercial hub for the North Central Florida area that is especially noted for the excellence of its
medical and educational institutions. Gainesville is only 60-90 minutes from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of
Mexico beaches, and the area enjoys beautiful sunshine and moderate temperatures year-round. Residents may enjoy a
busy schedule of outstanding community events and festivals which draw participants from around the state and occasionally
the world.
University of Florida
Gainesville is best known as the home of the University of Florida (UF), important in education, medicine, cultural arts,
and sports in the area. Alachua County is surrounded by many natural wonders, including rivers, lakes and the crystal springs
for which it is famous. Outdoor enthusiasts have +/- 40 nature parks within 50 miles of Gainesville to picnic, boat,
swim, dive, hike, camp, bike, hunt or fish.
